Whether your son is suiting up for his first season or his fifth, this checklist covers everything a youth tackle football player needs. I have updated this list based on what I have learned outfitting three boys through multiple seasons of upper Midwest football.
Required Safety Equipment
- NOCSAE-certified helmet with proper fit
- Shoulder pads sized to position and build
- Mouthguard — required at all youth levels
- Hip, tail, thigh, and knee pads
Footwear
- Molded cleats for most youth players — confirm with your league whether metal cleats are permitted
Clothing and Practice Gear
- Practice pants — confirm whether league-issued before purchasing
- Athletic cup — strongly recommended
- Compression shorts or integrated girdle
Recommended Additions
- Receiver gloves for skill position players
- Chin strap replacement set
Upper Midwest Cold Weather Additions
- Thin thermal base layer top and bottom — must fit under shoulder pads
- Hand warmers for sideline use
- Cold-weather gloves for sideline warmth
- Neck gaiter for sub-freezing practice temperatures
